일제 강점기 제주에서는 1930년부터 1932년 1월까지 238차례 크고 작은 집회와 시위, 참가 연인원이 1만 7천여명에 이르는 해녀항일 투쟁이 일어났다. 제주도사(현 도지사)가 해녀조합장을 겸임하면서 해녀들에 대한 부당한 수탈을 일삼았는데 이에 격분한 해녀들이 호미와 빗창(전복을 딸 때 쓰는 도구)을 들고 대대적인 시위를 일으켰다. 적게는 수백 명 많게는 수천 명의 해녀들이 참가해 2년 동안 지속적으로 별여온 이 항쟁은 세화리 오일장 시위뿐만 아니라 다구치 데이키 도사의 차를 가로막고 직접적인 면담을 요구했으며 빠져 나가려는 도사의 차 위에까지 올라타 시위를 벌였다. 연행자가 발생하자 빗창을 들고 지서를 습격하고 순사들과 육박전까지 벌였던 이 격렬한 항쟁은 비단 한국사뿐만 아니라 세계사에서도 그 유례를 쉽게 찾아보기 어려운 여성 대항쟁이었으며 백 명이 넘는 연행자가 발생했음에도 굽힘이 없이 싸워 결국 요구안 대부분을 관철시킨 승리의 역사였다. 하지만 그럼에도 불구하고 이러한 해녀항쟁은 오늘날 대중에게 거의 알려지지 않았다. 제주 해녀항쟁이 변방의 역사, 여성의 역사이기 때문이다. 해녀항쟁은 항일의 성격을 띠고 있었지만 본질적으로는 제주 민중이 줄기차게 당해왔던 부당한 억압과 착취에 대한 저항이었으며 생존권 투쟁이었다. 이처럼 우리에게 잊혀진 제주 해녀 항쟁을 해녀의 삶으로 생생하게 전함으로써 여성 투쟁의 역사와 삶을 보여주고자 한다.

Yeji chases after Chaeyun’s shadow and steps on it so that it can return to her. The main character Yeji is worried that her family might break up because of her and embarks on the adventure of finding her mom’s shadow. When Yeji becomes a shadow chaser, she begins to understand the world of grownups. Her father works day and night as a deliveryman and is too busy even to answer his daughter’s phone calls; her mother has to go back to work after her miscarriage, still struggling with the sense of loss and sadness. There is a moment in everyone’s life when they want to run away from difficulties or reality, and in the graphic novel, this is depicted by a shadow leaving its owner and running away. A shadow is an essential part of the person, and when you deny your shadow, you will lose yourself in the end. As Ursula Le Guin said, “When you light a candle, you also cast a shadow.” The writer also said that avoidance or denial cannot be an answer in this world of light and darkness, and you need courage to face who you really are. In the story, Yeji remembers how happy she was just to be home with her mom and dad all day, and it teaches us the way to protect our loved ones is to protect yourself, and that is the way to find happiness.
